Recent History

 

Plympton was actually incorporated into the City of Plymouth in 1967, but has continued to grow extraordinarily ever since.

Smiths Crisps Burns down 1976 on Strode Road

Chaplins burns down on Strode Road

Lord Louis opened 1981

Harewood Club burnt down in 1985. it was Plympton's only nightclub.

Boringdon Hall re-opened 1986, burnt down 1988, but refurbished fairly quickly, without the night club.

Langage Science park established at top end of Town

New Harewood house is built, without many of the facilities of the earlier building

Erril retail Park opens, first of many giant superstores open in Town. Coypool expands, with a bigger retail section

Swimming Pool opened after a long campaign to have one built, as a gesture for the council putting the Errill retail park in place

Westcountry Television starts broadcasting from Langage

St Stephen's Place is opened on ridgeway. A modern shopping arcade, built on the site of the old court house. During it's construction, ancient ruins were discovered, but it was deemed too late to save them. The clock tower on the court house is placed on the new building, as well as an ancient doorway found during the excavation, which is placed in the middle.

Chaddlewood is expanded, with 1000s of new homes built on green field sites

Chaddlewood Inn opened 1996

Chaddlewood community centre, including shopping centre, opens after many years of expectation

National carriers burns down on Strode Road 1997, not many places left there now which haven't burnt down!

Campaign to save pathfields from developers fails, although only small part of the Area is affected.

2004 Plympton celebrates it's 1,00th Anniversary.
